Week 10 (March 15-21)
Opening Question / Icebreaker:
- Have you visited a place that represents worldly power? If so, what was that like and what did it make you think about?
Pray Together – ask God to bless your group, your time in His word, and your relationships.
Read Habakkuk 2:6-20. https://www.esv.org/Habakkuk+2/
Observation & Interpretation Questions:
- What is the larger context for the five woes? (see v. 14 & 20)
- How does this section answer Habakkuk’s original concern (1:12-13)
- What are the metaphors used for Babylon in the five woes?
- How will God destroying Babylon spread God’s glory?
- What new theme does v. 18 introduce that is part of the fifth woe? What is ironic about that?
- The final fulfillment of this prophecy is Babylon’s fall as recorded in Revelation chapters 17-18. How does this passage in Habakkuk provide encouragement regarding the second coming of Christ?
Application Questions:
- What or who builds an empire today like Babylon – with stolen goods, unjust gain, bloodshed, is drunk with power, and encourages others to do likewise?
- What can you do by faith to impact a world where such things happen?
- What are we to do if we are made aware of an idol in our lives?
Close in Prayer: Pray together – lift any praises or concerns of the group members up to God in prayer.
